The first full moon of 2025, a supermoon, is set to illuminate the skies across Pakistan on October 7, marking a significant astronomical event. As the Moon reaches its closest point to Earth, it will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon, according to the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco).
At this perigee — the point where the Moon is nearest to Earth — the supermoon will be about 224,599 miles (361,400 kilometers) away. This will be the first supermoon in nearly a year, the last one having occurred in November 2024.
Suparco has also noted that the Moon’s appearance near the horizon could make it look even larger due to an optical illusion, an effect that has intrigued sky-watchers for centuries. The upcoming supermoon is the first of several expected this year, with additional supermoons occurring on November 5 and December 5, 2025. A fourth supermoon will take place in early January 2026, but it will not be part of the 2025 cycle.
On average, three to four supermoons are observed each year.
