Chinese scientists have set a new world record by creating a magnetic field of 351,000 gauss using a fully superconducting magnet.
According to the scientists, this achievement will further advance modern superconducting scientific instruments into the commercial field.
This achievement will provide technical support in many advanced fields, including fusion magnetic systems, space electromagnetic propulsion, superconducting induction heating, magnetic levitation and efficient power transmission.
The magnet was developed by the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Hefei in collaboration with the Hefei International Applied Superconductivity Center, the Institute of Energy of the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center and Tsinghua University.
The Earth itself is a huge magnet, which creates a geomagnetic field of 0.5 gauss. But scientists created a field 700,000 times stronger than the Earth’s geomagnetic field and also broke the record of 323,500 gauss.
It should be noted that superconducting magnets are made by wrapping superconducting materials and they create extremely powerful magnetic fields.
