YouTube will introduce an AI-powered system to verify users’ ages starting August 13, 2025, in an effort to deliver safer, age-appropriate content.
The trial will begin with a select group of users in the United States. Using machine learning, the platform will estimate age by analysing account activity, viewing categories, and search history. If it suspects a user is underage, age restrictions will be applied automatically.
When the AI cannot confirm a user’s age, verification through a government-issued ID or credit card will be required.
YouTube says the feature will expand to other countries based on trial results. The system will operate independently of the birth date listed on an account, though it may impose limits some younger users find restrictive.
