If the world actually followed international law, all nations would be discussing how to prevent rogue states from committing war crimes. Regretfully, the last two years have demonstrated that the international order harbors unspeakable contempt for the oppressed and a soft place for occupiers. What else could account for our collective inaction when Israel, the most favored partner of the West, assassinated the prime minister of Yemen, a sovereign state, in late August? The length of time it has taken to express our displeasure is disheartening.
“What are world leaders thinking?” is a question that speaks for itself. Why is it taking so long to hold Israel accountable and exercise restraint? The Houthis’ backing of Palestine was a direct factor in the murder of Yemen’s prime minister. In an effort to put economic pressure on the settler state, the Houthis shut the Red Sea as Israel stepped up its attack on Gaza, preventing ships headed for Israel from using the channel. The US spearheaded a multi-nation coalition with cutting-edge defense technology to combat this, but the Houthis were unaffected.
Despite Yemen being one of the poorest countries in the area, their tenacity ultimately compelled even US President Donald Trump to recognize their power. Israel has been ruthlessly committing genocide in Gaza since October 2023. Although independent experts put the death toll closer to 400,000, more than 60,000 individuals have been recorded murdered, and Israel has acknowledged that at least 80% of those killed were civilians. The world has been witnessing the bleeding remains of children on social media for the past two years, yet anytime someone dares to denounce the killing, apartheid defenders gaslight them. Israel has targeted the prime minister of a sovereign state, assassinated political figures in Iran and Lebanon, and killed the leader of the Lebanese resistance in an effort to pressure Palestinian resistance into surrender. International tribunals and penalties would have been imposed on the leaders of any other nation that had committed such crimes.
However, for immoral reasons, the occupation of Gaza by Israel seems to be the ultimate objective of global powers, regardless of the human cost. In a perfect world, immediate international action would have resulted from genocide specialists’ recognition that Israel’s actions constitute genocide. Instead, Israel’s much more deadly program of collective punishment seems to have no effect on countries that express shock when faced with any other terrorist assault. Palestinians have been let down by the world. It has left Gaza. It has also made fun of humans in any way. Maybe there’s nothing else to say. Do we dare expect that the world would intervene to put an end to Israel’s homicidal campaign and regain its lost conscience?
