Only a revolutionary and organised workers’ movement can end exploitation and oppression inside workplaces, speakers said at a gathering organised by the National Trade Union Federation Pakistan, Baldia Factory Fire Affectees Association, and Home-Based Women Workers Federation to mark the memory of the 260 martyrs of the Baldia factory fire.

The meeting, chaired by veteran leader Habibuddin Junaidi, heard fiery speeches reminding that the Baldia tragedy symbolizes how both local and international capitalists prioritize profit over human lives. Speakers warned that any attempt by multinational companies in Europe or elsewhere to dilute labor protection laws would make workplaces even more unsafe.

The victims’ families condemned the inhuman and discriminatory treatment meted out to them, saying it has exposed the anti-worker face of the ILO’s Pakistan office. They accused the ILO of evading accountability for billions of rupees earmarked for compensation to the heirs of the victims.

Participants demanded that factories be made safe, the German brand linked to the tragedy issue a public apology, and a memorial training center be established at the factory site to honor the martyrs. They also called for implementation of court orders regarding pensions for all heirs, an end to illegal contract systems, and strict enforcement of labor laws.

Among those who addressed the gathering were Nasir Mansoor, General Secretary NTUF Pakistan; Qazi Khizar, Vice Chairperson Human Rights Commission of Pakistan; Hasna Khatoon, Chairperson Baldia Affectees Association; Rafiq Baloch, President NTUF Pakistan; Saira Feroz, President Home-Based Women Workers Federation; Comrade Gul Rehman, head of Workers Rights Movement; Riaz Abbasi of SITE Labour Forum, and others.
