Did you know that there are sharks in the world that emit light? Yes, there are sharks that really glow in the dark ocean.

These sharks are called bioluminescent. These are sharks that emit natural light from their bodies. This light is produced through a chemical process (bioluminescence).

That is, special cells in the shark’s body produce “light” called photophores.

This light is usually blue or green in color, which can be seen in the dark deep ocean and is used for various reasons (for example, to hide itself or attract prey).

Some of these sharks are only 20 to 30 centimeters long. They have small light cells under their belly. This light helps them “hide” from predators looking from below. That is, this shark blends in with the ocean background thanks to its light.

The world’s largest luminous shark can be about 6 feet long. It was first discovered off New Zealand in 2021. This shark emits a faint blue light.

According to scientific research, this light is probably used to camouflage itself, signal other members of the species, or attract prey.
