UN’s moral reckoning

The internal revolt at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) marks a critical juncture in the international response to the Gaza crisis. Hundreds of staff members are urging leadership to declare Israel’s offensive a genocide, arguing that the UN’s credibility is at stake if it remains silent any longer. This unprecedented demand reflects profound frustration over the scale of suffering in Gaza and the international community’s failure to stop it. With over 63,000 Palestinians killed, mostly civilians, and famine ravaging the population, the OHCHR’s own experts warn that conditions are increasingly incompatible with Palestinian survival.

The term “genocide” carries legal and historical weight, and the OHCHR has historically been cautious in its use. However, staff argue that all available evidence — including extensive reporting by UN mechanisms and independent experts — meets the legal threshold. They draw parallels to the UN’s silence during the Rwandan genocide, a failure that haunts the institution’s legacy. Israel and its blind allies can deny the accusations all they want, but the last week alone has seen enough war crimes conducted to meet the definition of genocide — from forced starvation to bombing hospitals and targeting civilians.

The OHCHR and UN cannot continue hiding behind semantics, such as claiming only a court can determine whether an action or policy amounts to genocide. What the Netanyahu regime is doing goes against every definition of human decency. If the offending party was not Israel but rather Iran, Iraq, or Afghanistan, the world would have already invaded the country, overthrown its government and begun efforts to put its leaders on trial. The OHCHR has a responsibility to demand concrete actions from member states, including suspending arms sales to Israel. The ICJ may take years to rule, but Gaza’s civilians cannot wait. As Israel intensifies the killing of civilians, the OHCHR needs to do its part if it intends to avoid accusations of barely doing anything.
