A policeman was martyred and another seriously injured when armed terrorists attacked a police checkpoint in Mir Ali tehsil on Monday morning. Police confirmed that Constable Nizamullah was killed in the assault, while Constable Inam sustained critical injuries while three attackers were also killed in return fire.

According to the police spokesperson, the attackers opened indiscriminate fire with automatic weapons. However, the policemen retaliated promptly, killing three assailants on the spot. The bodies of the assailants and the injured policeman were shifted to Mir Ali Hospital, where doctors described Inam’s condition as critical.

Eyewitnesses told The Express Tribune that panic gripped the area during the exchange of fire, forcing shopkeepers to close their businesses and residents to shut their homes. Locals praised the bravery of the policemen, saying they had “sacrificed their lives to protect the community from greater destruction.”

Following the incident, a heavy contingent of security forces and police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down possible facilitators.

Later, the funeral prayers of the martyred constable Nizamullah were offered at Governor Cottage, Miranshah. The ceremony was attended by GOC 7 Division Major General Adil Iftikhar, senior civil and police officials, and a large number of locals. The martyred officer was laid to rest with full police honors.

Speaking to the media, the grieving family of Constable Nizamullah said: “Our son sacrificed his life for the country. We are proud of his martyrdom, but the government must also take care of the families of martyrs.” Tribal elders echoed the demand, urging authorities to ensure financial support and education for the children of the fallen policeman.

Police officials stated that investigations are ongoing and vowed to intensify operations to maintain peace in the region.

It is worth noting that this was the third attack on police in Bannu Division within a week, claiming the lives of three cops.
