The Sindh Public Service Commission has once again been engulfed in scandal, this time over the recruitment of BPS-17 Veterinary and Research Officers. The Sindh High Court has stayed the process after it emerged that a candidate with dubious academic credentials had managed to clear both the written and interview stages and was even recommended for appointment under the rural female quota. That the commission itself admitted to this glaring lapse has dealt a severe blow to its credibility.
The controversy has not ended there. Other petitioners have alleged that SPSC violated recruitment rules, ignored court directions and mishandled quotas for women, minorities and persons with disabilities. Allegations of domicile manipulation have also surfaced. Such complaints strike at the heart of fairness and transparency in a body whose very purpose is to provide a merit-based recruitment system for public service. Sadly, this is not the first time SPSC has been dragged into controversy. Its history is littered with allegations of leaked exam papers and blatant disregard for merit. In many instances, courts have had to step in, either halting recruitment processes or ordering inquiries.
The consequences of this are far-reaching. Thousands of candidates prepare for these competitive exams with the hope that their hard work will secure them a fair chance at employment. When irregularities come to light, it is not just individual appointments that are questioned but the very integrity of the system. This disillusionment can have a corrosive effect, fuelling perceptions that connections matter more than competence.
The provincial government must recognise the gravity of this crisis. Cosmetic fixes will no longer suffice. What is needed is a thorough overhaul of recruitment procedures and an independent mechanism of oversight to ensure accountability. Without such measures, the SPSC will remain synonymous with controversy, and the promise of equal opportunity in Sindh’s public service will continue to ring hollow.
