Sialkot records heaviest rainfall in nearly five decades

Sialkot experienced its heaviest one-day rainfall in almost 50 years, with more than 363 millimetres recorded in the past 24 hours, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported. This surpasses the previous record of 339mm set on August 6, 1976.

The downpour submerged major areas, including Rangpura, Shahabpura, Dara Araiyan, Allama Iqbal Chowk and Prem Nagar, severely disrupting daily life. Local authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to remain cautious as drainage systems struggle to cope.

Heavy rains, coupled with water released from India’s upstream dams, have triggered flooding across several Punjab districts. The provincial government has deployed army troops in Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Narowal and Okara to assist with rescue and relief operations.

Rescue teams, police and civil defence units are already active on the ground, while Army Aviation remains on standby. Officials said emergency shelters, food supplies and medical aid have been arranged as rising river levels continue to pose a serious threat.
