LAHORE: The Emergency Services Department (Rescue 1122) responded to 1,462 road traffic accidents across Punjab during the last 24 hours, a majority of which — 74 percent — involved motorcycles, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and lane discipline to curb the rising trend of accidents.
According to official data issued by the Provincial Monitoring Cell of Rescue 1122 on Saturday, 753 people were seriously injured in these incidents and were immediately shifted to nearby district and tehsil headquarters hospitals. Another 945 victims with minor injuries were provided on-the-spot medical treatment by rescue medical teams, which helped reduce the burden on hospitals across the province.
The data revealed that a total of 1,707 people were affected in these accidents, including 927 drivers, 72 underage drivers, 609 passengers, and 171 pedestrians. Out of the total victims, 1,331 were males and 376 females.
In terms of age distribution, 369 injured individuals were below 18 years of age, 861 were between 18 and 40 years, while 477 were above 40 years, reflecting that the most active age group on roads remains the most vulnerable to traffic mishaps.
A breakdown of district-wise accident data shows that Lahore once again topped the list with 246 accident calls resulting in 297 victims, followed by Gujranwala, which reported 88 victims in 86 accidents, and Multan, with 81 victims in 86 accidents during the same period.
The statistics further revealed that 1,448 motorcycles, 103 auto-rickshaws, 149 cars, 33 vans, 9 passenger buses, 49 trucks, and 154 other types of vehicles were involved in these accidents across the province.
A spokesperson for Rescue 1122 emphasized that most of these accidents could be avoided through strict adherence to traffic laws, proper lane discipline, and awareness among motorcyclists regarding the use of helmets and safe driving practices.
The spokesperson added that Rescue 1122 teams remain on high alert across Punjab to ensure timely emergency response, pre-hospital care, and safe patient transfer to hospitals, but long-term road safety requires collective responsibility from both drivers and authorities.
