Punjab government has launched its first e-taxi scheme, aiming to promote green transport and create employment opportunities.

In the first phase, 1,100 electric vehicles will be distributed, with 1,000 allocated to the corporate sector and 100 to individual applicants. Thirty e-taxis are reserved for women.

Applications can be submitted online at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk. Vehicles will be provided through five-year interest-free instalments, with the government covering all interest costs, officials said.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the scheme will encourage electric vehicle use and support environmentally friendly transport.

Earlier on Monday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that 15 electric buses would begin operating on different routes, supported by four charging units installed at the terminal.

The CM added that the initiative would later expand across Punjab, making modern and eco-friendly transport available to more districts.

The CM inaugurated the Green Electric Bus Service and a new bus terminal in Mianwali.

In April of this year, CM Punjab had given in-principle approval for a province-wide electric bus project that will see 1,500 buses deployed across multiple cities.
