Pakistan, Turkiye and the shared cause of Palestine

The meeting between Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on the sidelines of the 21st extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has once again placed the plight of Palestine at the centre of Muslim world diplomacy. At a time when Gaza and the occupied territories are reeling under one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent memory, the reaffirmation of solidarity by Pakistan and Türkiye is not only timely but essential to sustain global attention on this long-standing tragedy.
The leaders of Pakistan and Turkiye voiced deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis and famine conditions in Gaza, where hundreds of thousands face starvation, lack of medical aid, and displacement. The devastation caused by relentless bombardments and blockades has left the region with collapsed infrastructure, a crippled health system, and a population struggling for survival. In such circumstances, the call by both countries for urgent humanitarian aid and relief is a moral and political necessity.
Palestine has become a litmus test for the conscience of the international community. Despite decades of UN resolutions and global outcry, the Palestinian people remain deprived of justice, statehood, and dignity. The failure to act decisively has emboldened aggression and perpetuated cycles of violence. Pakistan and Turkiye’s joint stance is therefore a reminder that silence is not an option and that the Muslim world must rise with unity and moral clarity to support Palestine.
The meeting also carried symbolic importance, being held during the 21st extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers. Pakistan expressed appreciation for Turkiye’s leadership as Chair of the 51st OIC Council, recognising its active role in rallying Muslim nations. The OIC, however, has long faced criticism for being reactive rather than proactive in addressing crises. While statements of solidarity are valuable, what Palestinians need is coordinated action: effective diplomatic pressure, unified appeals in international forums, and tangible humanitarian support.
Here lies both the challenge and opportunity. With leading nations like Pakistan and Turkiye taking principled positions, the OIC can reclaim its credibility by moving beyond resolutions to real initiatives. Joint humanitarian convoys, advocacy for ceasefire in global institutions, and mobilising international civil society are avenues that the Muslim world must explore with renewed vigour.
Beyond the Palestinian question, the meeting reaffirmed the depth of Pakistan-Turkiye relations. The two countries share not just historical and cultural ties but also an enduring brotherhood grounded in mutual trust. Over the decades, Ankara and Islamabad have supported each other on core national issues. Turkiye has consistently backed Pakistan on matters like Kashmir, while Pakistan has reciprocated by supporting Turkiye’s positions on Cyprus and other concerns.
This spirit of solidarity was once again visible as both sides looked forward to enhancing multifaceted cooperation. From trade and defence collaboration to education, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people linkages, the Pakistan-Turkiye partnership holds immense promise. In an era of shifting alliances, this relationship serves as a stabilising force, built not on expediency but on shared values and common aspirations.
The plight of Palestine has historically served as a rallying point for Muslim nations, yet unity has often been elusive. Divisions, competing interests, and external pressures have diluted the collective voice of the Ummah. Pakistan and Turkiye, by demonstrating a united front, can act as catalysts for renewed Muslim unity. Their leadership is crucial in reminding the world that the Palestinian issue is not merely a regional dispute but a question of universal justice and human rights.
For Pakistan, this position aligns with its long-standing commitment to the Palestinian cause. For Turkiye, under its active diplomacy, it signals a continued willingness to take on leadership roles in the Muslim world. Together, they can push the OIC and the wider international community to act with urgency, not rhetoric.
The humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine is deepening by the day. Expressions of solidarity must now translate into immediate relief and sustained political action. The joint reaffirmation by Pakistan and Turkiye is a step in the right direction, but the road ahead requires consistent diplomacy, resource mobilisation, and collective unity within the OIC.
Pakistan and Turkiye’s brotherly ties, reaffirmed during this meeting, provide a foundation to amplify the Palestinian cause on the global stage. The challenge is immense, but so too is the moral responsibility. History will judge nations not by their words but by their actions in the face of injustice. For the people of Palestine, every day is a test of survival; for the Muslim world, every day is a test of conscience.
