OpenAI has released ChatGPT-5, its most advanced AI model yet, making it free to users across the globe. The upgrade promises faster, smarter, and more versatile responses, as the company races against tech rivals to lead the AI revolution.
CEO Sam Altman called it “a major leap forward,” comparing past models to students and GPT-5 to “a PhD-level expert.” The AI now serves nearly 700 million weekly users, though Altman noted it still isn’t capable of continuous learning — a feature he sees as key to true artificial general intelligence.
Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg said the rapid progress toward superintelligence marks “the beginning of a new era for humanity.” Tech giants including Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Elon Musk’s xAI have poured billions into AI since ChatGPT’s 2022 launch, with Chinese start-up DeepSeek also making waves this year.
Early tester Simon Willison praised GPT-5 for being reliable and often impressive, while Musk claimed his Grok 4 Heavy is “smarter.” OpenAI’s safety lead Alex Beutel said the model was trained to be honest and avoid harmful outputs. The company also released two open-weight models for free download to promote transparency and challenge competitors.
