Bollywood star kid Aryan Khan’s debut Netflix series The Ba**ds of Bollywood* has landed in controversy after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) called for action against the makers over a scene featuring actor Ranbir Kapoor using an e-cigarette.
According to Indian media reports, the NHRC has urged Mumbai Police to register a case against the producers for allegedly violating the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019. The complaint was initially filed by activist Vinay Joshi, who argued that the depiction of a vape without statutory warnings or disclaimers could normalize its use and negatively influence young viewers.
The disputed scene appears in the final episode of the seven-part satire series, where Kapoor, one of 21 celebrity cameos, asks his manager (played by Anya Singh) for a vape. Critics claim the omission of warnings amounts to unlawful promotion of a banned product.
In addition to approaching Mumbai Police, the NHRC has also issued notices to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, seeking swift corrective measures.
The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, directed by Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan, premiered on Netflix on September 18. The project marks his first outing as a filmmaker, arriving nearly four years after Aryan was embroiled in the high-profile NCB drugs-on-cruise case.
