India’s Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem will face off at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next week, marking their first meeting since the Paris Olympics.
Chopra, the Tokyo Olympic champion, and Nadeem, who claimed gold in Paris with a record-breaking throw, were once hailed for their brotherly rivalry. But relations have cooled after this year’s deadly border conflict between their countries, with both athletes downplaying any personal friendship.
Nadeem, 28, returns after calf surgery, while Chopra, 27, is in strong form, having crossed 90m in Doha and finishing runner-up at the Zurich Diamond League. Germany’s Julian Weber and Grenada’s two-time world champion Anderson Peters will also challenge for the podium.
The men’s javelin final takes place on September 18.
