LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the construction of a large underground parking plaza near Nasir Bagh at an estimated cost of Rs1.8 billion, a major infrastructure project aimed at easing Lahore’s worsening traffic and parking challenges.

Officials said the multi-billion-rupee facility is expected to provide significant relief in the congested city centre, where motorists struggle with limited parking and clogged roads. Once cleared by the provincial cabinet, the project will mark one of the largest urban mobility interventions under the current government.

Alongside the parking facility, the chief minister also sanctioned a Rs200 million beautification plan for Lahore’s historic Tollinton Market. The scheme will focus on upgrading infrastructure, improving pedestrian walkways, and enhancing the landmark’s overall appeal to residents and visitors.

The projects are part of a broader development push across Punjab. Earlier this week, Maryam Nawaz highlighted that 20,000 kilometres of roads had been built or rehabilitated under provincial programmes. She also announced the rollout of 1,100 electric buses at subsidised fares of Rs20, the induction of anti-smog guns to combat pollution, and the appointment of wildlife rangers to protect natural habitats.

The chief minister said the initiatives reflect her government’s “holistic approach” to urban governance, balancing transport, environment, and public services.
