The Italian government has funded state-of-the-art laboratories at Karakoram International University (KIU) in Gilgit and the University of Baltistan (UOB) in Skardu, marking a major boost for scientific research in northern Pakistan, officials said.

The facilities, part of the “Water for Development” project jointly implemented by EvK2CNR and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aim to strengthen research on water quality, glaciology, agriculture, and livestock, according to Arif Hussain, project in-charge.

Modern Research Infrastructure

At KIU, the newly established laboratories are equipped with advanced instruments to conduct detailed analyses of drinking water, agricultural water use, and glacier systems, a crucial step for a region increasingly affected by climate change.

Meanwhile, UOB will host two laboratories focusing on agriculture, livestock, and wildlife research, supporting disease diagnosis in livestock and improving productivity in the farming sector.

Training the next generation of researchers

To complement the new infrastructure, a four-day training program was conducted from September 17 to 20. Experts from leading Italian universities, including the University of Marche and the University of Cagliari, trained students, faculty, and government officials in water quality assessment, agricultural solutions, and livestock management.

Departments participating in the training included PCRWR, GBEPA, Agriculture and Livestock, Health, WASA, CKNP, and DNP.

Strengthening research capacity

Officials said the initiative will enhance the research capabilities of higher education institutions in Gilgit-Baltistan, support sustainable management of water and glacial systems, and contribute to strategies for safe drinking water and efficient agricultural practices.

The project has been hailed as a milestone in Pakistan-Italy scientific collaboration, reinforcing sustainable development efforts in the mountainous region.
