DUBAI: A fresh controversy erupted on Sunday when the Indian cricket team declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the Pakistan Cricket Board chief. According to sources, the move was carried out on the directions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Despite resistance from the Indian side, Naqvi stood his ground and insisted on presenting the trophy himself, refusing to yield to the demand. The incident added a dramatic twist to the final in Dubai, underscoring the off-field tensions that have run parallel to the tournament.
Insiders revealed that India’s decision reflected its rigid posture throughout the competition, where it consistently sought arrangements outside of standard neutral practices.
India secured the Asia Cup title after defeating Pakistan by five wickets in the championship clash at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The trophy row was not the only flashpoint. Earlier in the day, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav once again refused to shake hands with Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha at the toss. This marked the third such refusal during the event, further highlighting the ongoing strains between the arch-rivals.
The lack of handshake followed a string of contentious moments beginning from the group stage, with the rivalry generating as much noise off the field as it did on it.
