GAZA CITY: Hamas has accepted a new ceasefire proposal aimed at ending more than 22 months of conflict in Gaza, a senior official from the group confirmed on Monday.

The agreement follows mediation efforts led by Egypt and Qatar, with support from the United States.

“Hamas has submitted its response, agreeing to the mediators’ new proposal. We pray to God to extinguish the fire of this war on our people,” senior Hamas official Bassem Naim said in a statement.

A Hamas source told AFP the group accepted the offer “without requesting any amendments.”

Egyptian officials said the proposal has been passed on to Israel, which has not yet responded. “The ball is now in its court,” Cairo noted.

According to sources close to the talks, mediators are expected to announce the agreement soon and provide guarantees for its implementation, with hopes of progressing toward a permanent settlement.

Egyptian state-linked media outlet Al-Qahera reported that the proposal includes:

  • A 60-day truce,

  • Partial release of hostages,

  • Release of Palestinian detainees,

  • Expanded humanitarian aid access to Gaza.

The development comes as Israel faces growing international criticism over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have accused Israel of committing “genocide,” a charge Israel rejects.

Israel’s security cabinet recently approved plans to expand operations in Gaza City and surrounding refugee camps, prompting further international condemnation and rising domestic opposition.
