Veteran journalist and community advocate is to help advance
opportunities for women and girls across the Commonwealth
VIRGINIA (United States): Governor Glenn Youngkin has appointed Nuzaira Azam, an accomplished journalist and community leader, to the Virginia Council on Women. Azam was officially sworn in on Tuesday, August 26, at the historic Virginia State Capitol by Secretary of the Commonwealth Kelly Gee.
The Virginia Council on Women advises the Governor on key issues affecting women and works to expand educational, professional, cultural, and civic opportunities for women and girls throughout the Commonwealth.
A resident of Herndon, Virginia, Azam brings decades of experience in journalism and civic engagement to the Council. She is the founder and president of The Global Beat Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering dialogue, leadership, and community involvement. The foundation hosts seminars, workshops, and youth forums addressing contemporary challenges, with a strong emphasis on women’s empowerment and leadership development. It also provides specialized training for journalists, with a particular focus on supporting women in the media.
Azam’s appointment underscores her commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices and promoting gender equity in public discourse.
“It is an honor to serve on the Virginia Council on Women,” said Azam. “I look forward to contributing to initiatives that uplift women and youth across our state.”
The Virginia Council on Women serves as an advisory body to the Governor of Virginia, working to identify and implement strategies that advance the role of women in civic, professional, and personal spheres.
