Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider Khan on Monday distributed relief supplies among flood-affected families in Chiniot, Muzaffargarh and Kasur during a ceremony held to mark Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s birthday.

The event, attended by PPP Central Punjab President and former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, senior leader Faisal Mir and other party officials, highlighted the party’s focus on humanitarian work.

Speaking as chief guest, Governor Haider Khan said the PPP had always stood with working-class communities and those facing hardship.

He lauded Bilawal’s decision to dedicate his birthday to flood victims, calling it a “revolutionary step.”

The governor, who recently visited Jhelum, Chakwal, Muzaffargarh, Alipur and Jalalpur, said he had witnessed the suffering of flood-hit residents firsthand.

He noted that under Faisal Mir’s initiative, each affected household was provided with a comprehensive relief package, including a month’s rations, four cots, a bicycle, bedding and other essentials.

Haider Khan also thanked the Punjab Red Crescent and Sweet Home for assisting in the relief operations, and urged philanthropists to contribute to rehabilitation efforts.

Addressing the gathering, Ashraf said the PPP did not seek political gain from humanitarian work.

“Our party has always shared the pain of the poor and extended support quietly, without point scoring. Helping people in need is the true way to celebrate our chairman’s birthday,” he said.

Separately, earlier in the day, the governor oversaw the departure of relief consignments for Gaza from Lahore Airport on behalf of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

He said 23 consignments, totalling over 2,200 tons of clothing, food items, dry rations and medicines, had so far been dispatched to Gaza and Palestine.

Condemning Israel’s continued bombardment of Gaza, Haider Khan described it as a threat to global peace and called on the United Nations to intervene.

He also urged Islamic nations to show unity in supporting Palestinians.
