The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $1 million to support communities devastated by recent floods in Pakistan.
The assistance will be routed through the World Health Organization (WHO) to deliver emergency healthcare to 465,000 people across 33 districts in all four provinces.
WHO Representative in Pakistan, Dr. Dapeng Luo, welcomed the donation, calling it a crucial step in saving lives and ensuring essential health coverage for vulnerable groups. During a visit to flood-hit areas, he noted that climate change has worsened monsoon patterns, increasing the frequency of natural disasters, and highlighted the need for stronger preparedness and rapid response systems.
Between June 26 and August 27, Pakistan reported 802 deaths, 1,088 injuries, and the loss of 5,584 livestock due to floods, according to WHO. The agency said it has already been providing emergency medical aid in affected regions since June.
