Gang-rape accused among four ‘killed in encounters’

The Crime Control Department (CCD) conducted four separate operations across Punjab, resulting in the deaths of four suspects, including the main accused in the high-profile Chung gang-rape case.

Police said CCD Model Town teams carried out a targeted raid in Kasur to apprehend Imran, the key suspect in the gang-rape case.

During the raid, a shootout ensued, and Imran was fatally shot — reportedly by the gunfire of his own accomplices. Police said Imran had been evading arrest since the incident and was considered the primary planner of the crime.

Inspector Shahid, who led the operation, narrowly escaped injury due to his bulletproof vest. However, the police mobile van sustained significant damage. Authorities noted that Imran’s three alleged accomplices — Owais, Zahid, and Irshad — had already been killed in previous encounters with CCD teams.

In a separate operation in Lahore’s Green Town area, a suspect identified as Babar Ali was being escorted for a recovery mission when unknown gunmen opened fire in an apparent bid to free him. Babar was critically injured in the crossfire and died en route to the hospital.

He was reportedly involved in multiple cases of murder, armed robbery, and attacks on law enforcement.

Another encounter took place in the Kahna area, where the CCD was conducting a location identification operation with a suspect named Nazir.

The police convoy was ambushed by Nazir’s associates, leading to an exchange of fire. Nazir was killed, allegedly by bullets fired by his own accomplices. Police claim he had a record of violent crimes across Punjab.

The fourth incident occurred in Sanda, where CCD Iqbal Town personnel were transporting a suspect, Salman Khalid, for identification of crime scenes. As the team approached the site, two unidentified attackers opened fire from the roadside.

Salman was fatally shot during the exchange. Officials stated he was wanted in several street crime and armed robbery cases.

All four incidents are under investigation. Police say the operations were part of an intensified crackdown on violent and repeat offenders.
