JHELUM: An FIR has been registered against religious scholar Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza in Jhelum, police confirmed on Tuesday.
Officials said the case was lodged at the City Police Station on the complaint of a local citizen. Mirza has been booked under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The development comes a day after he was detained under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) and placed under house arrest at the district jail. The MPO provision empowers authorities to arrest or detain individuals considered a threat to public safety or order.
Police also confirmed that Mirza’s academy has been sealed, while heavy security has been deployed outside his residence and academy premises to prevent any untoward incident.
Mirza, who commands an online following of over 3.1 million YouTube subscribers with more than 2,400 videos, is a prominent religious figure. In 2021, he survived an assassination attempt after being stabbed during one of his weekly lectures.
