Drug abuse is fast becoming one of the most alarming social problems in Pakistan. What makes the issue even more disturbing is its growing presence inside educational institutes. Schools, colleges and universities, places meant for learning and character-building, are increasingly being reported as hotspots for drug use.
Easy access to substances such as crystal meth (ice), hashish and synthetic drugs has made it possible for students to experiment at a young age. Peer pressure, curiosity and the desire to escape stress are among the main reasons that push students toward addiction. Some even fall into it due to the influence of so-called ‘friends’ or the glamorisation of drugs in popular culture and social media.
The consequences are devastating: students lose focus on studies, their health deteriorates, and in severe cases, addiction can ruin entire futures. Sadly, many parents and teachers remain unaware until it is too late.
Strict monitoring within educational campuses, stronger anti-drug policies and counselling services are urgently needed. Equally important is the role of awareness campaigns, so students understand the risks before they fall victim.
