And now Qatar

Tel Aviv’s shameless aggression on Doha is an extension of its nefarious designs of a Greater Israel. The Zionist state apparently was undeterred as its aircraft flew over, at least, three Arab states to bomb Qatar, incidentally an ally of the US. This showcased the changing dynamics of the region and of how miserable the Muslim world was before the onslaughts of the US-Israel duo. A mere statement of shock and awe from the leadership in Doha is tantamount to submission, and must have emboldened the aggressor. The attack perhaps was choreographed well in advance and Doha, which houses US Centcom’s Al-Udeid Air Base, was caught off guard, as Israel after facing a moral faceoff on the diplomatic mosaic intended to exterminate Hamas negotiating team housed in the Arab Peninsula.

Doha’s reaction was well in resilience, testifying its vision of compatibility for the region and, especially, the Palestinian cause. Notwithstanding the killing of five Hamas members on its soil in the attack, Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani vowed to stand firm for brokering a ceasefire over Gaza, as his envoy to the UN made it clear that Doha would not tolerate the “reckless Israeli behaviour and the ongoing disruption of regional security”.

A culpable United States played to the gallery as White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said hitting Hamas was a “worthy goal”. This is daredevil brinkmanship and tantamount to pushing the world’s most volatile region into a war. The fact that Qatar has faced aggression for the second time this year, the first time from Iran in its 12-day conflict with Israel, underscores the necessity of institutional mediation. The UN has been a failure, and this is where the epilogue from Chinese President Xi Jinping for the Global Governance Initiative is worth a thought.

The unipolar world under the US has bred discontent, and it is high time multilateralism paved the way for a new world order premised on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. Taming Israel is getting indispensable if the world has to be saved from a Third World War.
