Strong aftershocks shook eastern Afghanistan on Friday, just hours apart, deepening fears of further destruction in areas already devastated by deadly earthquakes this week.

The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a 5.4-magnitude tremor at a depth of 10 km in the southeast, following another late Thursday. The quakes come after a series of powerful shocks since Sunday that flattened villages in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, killing at least 2,205 people and injuring 3,640, according to Taliban authorities.

More than 6,700 homes have been destroyed, leaving thousands without shelter. Survivors remain outdoors, bracing for further tremors, while aid agencies warn of an urgent need for food, medicine, and tents.

Rescue efforts continue to be hampered by landslides and blocked roads in the quake-prone Hindu Kush region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide.
