KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced September 5 and 6 as public holidays in observance of Eid Milad un Nabi (Peace Be Upon Him). A notification stated that all provincial government offices, schools, and colleges will remain closed during this period.
The move follows the federal government’s decision to declare September 6, corresponding to 12th Rabi ul Awal, a national holiday to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The occasion is commemorated worldwide with processions, gatherings, and conferences highlighting his life and teachings.
The date was confirmed last week by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, after cloudy weather prevented the moon sighting across the country. Based on this, 12th Rabi ul Awal was set for September 6.
Karachi Traffic Police have also imposed a ban on heavy vehicles on 11th and 12th Rabi ul Awal, noting that major rallies will pass through key roads and routes. The restriction, officials said, is intended to ensure public safety during the processions.
With both federal and provincial holidays in place, citizens are expected to take part widely in the celebrations. Religious scholars, however, stress that Eid Milad un Nabi should be marked not only with festivities but also through adherence to the Prophet’s (PBUH) teachings.
