Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif arrived in Tianjin, China, on August 30, 2025, to represent Pakistan at the 25th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The summit provided an important platform for regional powers to enhance cooperation and find solutions to shared challenges. The Prime Minister not only presented Pakistan’s stance effectively during the formal sessions but also participated in historic events in Beijing and attended the Pakistan-China Business-to-Business Investment Conference. This conference further strengthened bilateral ties and paved the way for new avenues of investment in Pakistan.
In his address at the summit, the Prime Minister emphasized that the future of regional development and stability depends on dialogue and mutual cooperation. He highlighted the need for equitable distribution of water resources, the eradication of terrorism, and the strengthening of trade connectivity across the region. He also underscored Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, noting that these efforts were not only for Pakistan’s security but also for the peace of the entire region. His remarks were received with attention and appreciation by the member states, reflecting Pakistan’s recognized role in promoting peace and stability.
Chinese President Xi Jinping warmly welcomed Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. During their meeting, both leaders described Pakistan-China friendship as an “iron bond” that has stood the test of time. They agreed to further expand strategic cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This phase includes projects in industrialization, agriculture, minerals, energy, and infrastructure-sectors that will provide new directions for Pakistan’s economy. President Xi assured that China stands firmly with Pakistan and that both countries will jointly advance the journey of regional development.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Prime Minister held meetings with several world leaders, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an and Russian President Vladimir Putin. These meetings focused on regional cooperation, trade partnerships, and security matters. Such engagements reflect Pakistan’s active and balanced diplomacy and reaffirm its role as an important stakeholder in regional and global politics.
In Beijing, Pakistan’s financial team held talks with heads of leading Chinese financial institutions, including the People’s Bank of China and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. These discussions resulted in assurances of enhanced financial cooperation and further investments in Pakistan. The recent rollover of loans from China not only provided stability to Pakistan’s economy but also helped restore investor confidence. This demonstrates that Pakistan-China relations are deeply rooted at political, strategic, and economic levels.
Another significant highlight of the visit was the Pakistan-China Business-to-Business Investment Conference. The event witnessed active participation from investors and business groups from both countries. Investment opportunities were discussed in sectors such as textiles, energy, IT, agriculture, and minerals. These initiatives are expected to generate new employment opportunities, increase exports, and further stabilize Pakistan’s economy.
The Prime Minister’s visit also reaffirmed Pakistan’s role as a responsible member of the international community. By engaging at forums like the SCO, Pakistan has shown its commitment not only to its internal development but also to regional peace and stability. The Prime Minister emphasized that regional countries must strengthen cooperation to usher in a new era of economic growth and social prosperity.
This visit marked a milestone for Pakistan in many ways. On one hand, it further solidified ties with China, while on the other, it improved engagement with other regional countries. The visit sent a strong message that Pakistan is serious about strengthening its economy while also advancing the agenda of global cooperation and development.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s visit to China was truly a successful and historic step for Pakistan. It gave new dimensions to the enduring friendship with China, strengthened relations with regional partners, and opened doors to fresh opportunities for investment, growth, and prosperity. This visit reflects Pakistan’s bright future and its positive role in promoting peace and stability in the region.
