Sometimes, words abandon you. Sometimes, you can write a book about a person, yet you cannot find a single line when you are forced to write about their departure. I never imagined that I would be writing the obituary of my very dear mentor, Syed Munawar Hussain Naqvi, Resident Editor of The Financial Daily International.
My association with him began in 2015, when he graciously invited me to write for The Financial Daily. That one invitation changed the course of my professional life. From that moment onwards, our bond grew stronger by the day. Whether it was a single WhatsApp message, a thoughtful email, or a phone call, we remained in constant touch. He always encouraged me, guided me, and stood by me like a lighthouse in stormy waters. Yesterday, we spoke as usual; today, I find myself struggling to come to terms with the unbearable news of his sudden passing. Such is life, unpredictable, fragile, and fleeting. This world may appear beautiful, but it is only a temporary trap. Death is the only eternal reality.
Munawar Naqvi was more than an accomplished journalist. He embodied qualities that are rare to find today: piety, humility, courtesy, and an unmatched gentleness. He was a thorough gentleman whose character and communication style left a deep impression on everyone who crossed his path. His sense of professionalism was not limited to the newsroom; it was a reflection of who he was as a human being; honest, kind, and inspiring.
To me, he was not only a mentor but a confidant and elder brother. In moments of professional uncertainty, his words would calm me; in times of personal struggle, his encouragement would uplift me. He had the unique ability to correct without hurting, to advise without imposing, and to inspire without even trying. Every conversation with him was a lesson in humility, patience, and grace.
It pains me deeply that I could not attend his funeral, nor can I yet bring myself to process the reality of his departure fully. The void he leaves in my life and in the lives of all who worked with him is immeasurable. Journalists often pride themselves on finding the right words, yet his passing has left me wordless.
My heartfelt condolences go to Manzar Naqvi Sahib, Executive Editor of The Financial Daily, who shared not only a blood relation but also a professional bond with him, and to his entire family. I also extend my sympathies to the Financial Daily editorial team, who have lost not just a colleague but a guiding light, a steady hand, and a source of wisdom that shaped the very identity of the newsroom.
The loss of Munawar Naqvi is not only personal; it is a collective loss to Pakistani journalism. His dedication to truth, his unwavering principles, and his generous mentorship will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know him. His life was a testament to the idea that true greatness lies not in power or position, but in kindness, humility, and a commitment to serving others.
May Almighty Allah bless his soul with eternal peace behaq Muhammad o Aal-e-Muhammad (?), forgive his shortcomings, and grant him the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous. May He also grant patience and strength to his family, friends, colleagues, and all of us who have been left shattered by this irreparable loss.
I humbly request readers to join me in reciting Surah Al-Fatiha for his departed soul.
