Pakistan recorded a landmark achievement in international ice hockey by clinching the LATAM Cup Division III Championship in Florida, United States.
The men’s team delivered a flawless performance, going unbeaten with five straight victories, including a commanding 6-1 win over Peru in the final. The triumph marked a remarkable turnaround from last year, when they secured just one victory.
In another milestone, the women’s team claimed bronze in Division II during its debut appearance, underscoring the rapid growth of the sport in Pakistan. The tournament featured more than 62 teams representing 17 countries.
“This first gold, first cup—you can’t do better than that,” said Kameron Sabir, Edmonton-based physician and coach of the men’s side. “It’s an amazing day for the country and for ice hockey. The women also delivered a tremendous performance in their first tournament.”
Women’s coach Mariya Rauf, who also plays forward for Yale University’s NCAA Division I team, expressed pride in the squad’s success. Holding a cricket bat gifted by her players, she noted:
“Cricket is our national sport, but after this, it’s clear hockey is growing every single day. This proves there’s talent in Pakistan, and we’re only going to get better.”
