Palestinian journalist Mohammed Salama was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza’s Nasser Hospital on August 25, just days before his planned wedding to fellow journalist Hala Asfour.
Salama, a cameraman for Al Jazeera, had spent years documenting the devastation of Israel’s assaults on Gaza. He was among several journalists and civilians killed when Israeli forces struck the hospital, where patients, displaced families, and rescue workers had gathered for safety. The attack, broadcast live, has fueled international outrage over Israel’s ongoing targeting of journalists and civilians with no accountability.
Salama and Asfour had recently celebrated their engagement on his birthday, sharing their joy in the midst of war. In a message posted online, he wrote:
“Despite the war and what distress and anxiety has come upon us, we are the safety of each other… even though we are surrounded by fear, we are the ones who walked dangerous paths together until we reached the point that binds us forever, marriage.”
Their love story had offered a rare glimpse of hope in Gaza’s darkness, now shattered by the very violence Salama had committed his career to exposing.
Israel has repeatedly targeted journalists in Gaza, often accusing them of ties to Hamas without evidence. Earlier this month, on August 10, an Israeli strike killed veteran reporter Anas Al Sharif along with his entire Al Jazeera crew.
According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, more than 240 journalists have been killed by Israeli attacks since October 2023, making this one of the deadliest periods for journalists in modern history.
