Television host and comedian Tabish Hashmi has revealed that he was once abducted by workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in Karachi—an incident he described as one of the most harrowing experiences of his life.
Speaking on a recent show, Hashmi said that while many had assumed he was an MQM supporter, he had, in fact, been a victim of the party’s violence and had no affiliation with MQM-Pakistan.
The incident, he recalled, took place during his university’s annual dinner. Initially chosen to host the event, he was barred at the last moment and instructed not to appear on stage. However, when his name was later announced for a “role of honour,” he attempted to approach the stage—only to be seized by MQM workers.
“They shoved me into an old FX car already packed with four men. I could barely breathe,” Hashmi recounted. “They pointed guns at me, threatened to kill me, and said they could dump my body without anyone ever knowing.”
Believing his life was about to end, Hashmi said the abductors held him for hours before releasing him near the Super Highway. They later returned him to the university with strict instructions not to step on stage again.
Although he now recalls the episode with humour, Hashmi admitted that at the time he was certain he would not make it out alive.
