DIR: Security forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Upper Dir foiled a major cross-border attack on Sunday, killing five members of the banned militant group Fitna-al-Khwarij in a joint counterterrorism operation.

Officials said intelligence reports had indicated terrorist regrouping along the Afghan border, prompting police and security agencies to launch pre-emptive action. The Counter-Terrorism Department, District Police, Rapid Response Force and Elite Force, led by District Police Officer Syed Muhammad Bilal, carried out coordinated raids in Dobando, Barikot, Salam Kot and Atandra.

During the operation, security personnel encircled the militants, set up checkpoints on key routes and established a command centre to block their movement. The fiercest gun battle occurred in Salam Kot, where five militants were killed. The body of one was recovered, while search teams continue to sweep the area.

One civilian was caught in the crossfire and killed, while seven police constables sustained minor injuries. They were shifted to hospital and are reported to be stable.

Residents welcomed the action, praising the forces for averting what officials described as a “large-scale terrorist assault.” Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed said timely intelligence, backed by technology, helped foil the infiltration attempt.

“Our officers and jawans are fully prepared to defend the homeland. Their courage and determination to defeat terrorists is unwavering,” he said.

Security forces have launched further search operations to ensure the area is completely cleared of militant presence.
