Armed robbers stormed the Defence residence of a senior Sindh police officer and a provincial government spokesperson early Saturday, holding the family hostage and escaping with jewellery, cash and foreign currency worth more than Rs20 million, police said.

Five masked men entered the Phase V home of Sindh Police SSP Tauheed Rehman Memon and Sindh government spokesperson Syeda Aqraba, police said. The assailants first overpowered the on-duty guard before forcing their way inside, where they held family members at gunpoint.

According to the first information report (FIR), the gang ransacked the house for nearly 30 minutes and fled around 5:15 a.m., warning the hostages not to resist. Stolen items included US dollars worth Rs9 million, one million cash, gold jewellery valued at Rs11 million, and a mobile phone.

The incident was reported at Darakhshan Police Station under Section 395 of the Penal Code. The investigation has been handed to the police’s specialised crime unit.

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar took serious notice of the robbery and directed the South Zone SSP to submit an initial report. He ordered investigators to obtain CCTV footage, enhance district-level intelligence and ensure the early arrest of the culprits.

“The police must provide details of the security plan in District South and keep me updated on the progress of the investigation,” Lanjar said in a statement.
