KARACHI – Heavy monsoon rains wreaked havoc in Karachi on Monday, leaving at least seven people dead, flooding large parts of the city, and disrupting power and traffic systems.
Continuous downpour triggered electrocution incidents and house collapses. In Gulistan-e-Jauhar, a wall collapse claimed the lives of a woman, her two children, and another person. In Orangi Town, an eight-year-old boy died in a similar incident, while two men were electrocuted in North Karachi and DHA.
The rain also crippled the city’s electricity supply. K-Electric confirmed that around 800 feeders tripped, plunging 40% of Karachi into darkness. Areas including Saddar, Korangi, Lyari, Surjani, Landhi, Keamari, and SITE remained without power for hours.
Urban flooding left major thoroughfares submerged, bringing traffic to a standstill. Dozens of vehicles broke down at Jail Chowrangi and Hassan Square, while overflowing drains in Shadman worsened the crisis. At the Sindh Secretariat, a parking shed collapsed due to the downpour.
Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori established a Rain Emergency Cell at the Governor House (helpline 1366) and announced the premises would remain open for citizens seeking shelter. He also sought federal assistance and personally visited affected areas, helping stranded residents.
According to the Met Department, Clifton alone recorded 70 mm of rainfall on Monday, with more heavy showers forecast until August 23. Some localities may receive up to 100 mm in the coming days.
