HYDERABAD: Environmental surveillance has detected wild poliovirus in a sewage sample from Hyderabad, marking the sixth such occurrence this year. The positive sample was found under a monthly surveillance mechanism, where samples are collected from sewage pumping stations. The last positive sample was detected in May.

In response to this, a meeting of the district polio eradication committee was held on Monday, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Zain-ul-Abidin Memon and SSP Adeel Hussain Chandio. The committee discussed the upcoming polio eradication campaign, which will run from September 1 to 7, 2025.

During the drive, children under five years of age will be administered anti-polio drops. Memon emphasized the campaign’s national importance and directed officials to monitor the movement of people from other districts to prevent the spread of the virus. He also stressed the need to focus on densely populated areas during the rainy season to ensure no child is left unvaccinated.

In addition, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination drive will begin on September 15, 2025. Departments have been urged to support field teams and ensure effective coverage in all union councils, with timely performance reports.
