KARACHI: Intermittent showers on Monday left several parts of Karachi flooded, disrupted traffic, and caused power outages across multiple neighborhoods, with more rainfall forecast over the next two days.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said a monsoon system over the Arabian Sea would continue to affect the city, bringing moderate to heavy showers on Tuesday and Wednesday. Earlier in the day, rain was reported in Sharea Faisal, Shah Faisal Colony, Airport, Model Colony, II Chundrigar Road, Defence, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Nazimabad, and surrounding areas.

Low-lying localities, including North Nazimabad, Nagan Chowrangi, and Dalmia, experienced urban flooding, while traffic snarls were reported as the downpour coincided with office and school timings.

Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah directed deputy commissioners to remain in the field and ensure timely drainage of rainwater. He also instructed K-Electric, HESCO, and SEPCO to provide uninterrupted electricity and maintain coordination with the Meteorological Department and PDMA.

According to a K-Electric spokesperson, around 350 feeders tripped during the rain, cutting power to Saddar, Old City Area, Garden, Nazimabad, and parts of Korangi. However, the utility said over 1,750 feeders remained operational, adding that power in some low-lying areas was deliberately suspended for safety.

Authorities have advised citizens to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid trees, poles, and fences vulnerable to lightning strikes.
