As the deadline for submitting nomination papers for the PP-87 by-election passed, the list of candidates vying for the seat has been finalised.

The constituency fell vacant following the conviction of former Punjab Assembly opposition leader Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar in a case related to the May 9 events.

Bhachar, a three-time elected representative on a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ticket, is no longer eligible to contest.

In a bid to retain political influence in the area, Bhachar’s wife, Ayesha Ahmad, and daughter, Munazzah Fatima, have both filed nomination papers.

Among other notable candidates is Inamullah Khan Niazi, a seasoned politician who previously contested from this constituency on a Pakistan Muslim League (PML) ticket.

Also entering the race is Jehan Zainab Niazi, daughter of Humair Hayat Rokhri.

From the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), District President Zubair Hamza Khan has filed nomination papers, while Muhammad Ayaz Khan is also seeking the ticket.
