Traffic eases in Rawalpindi as major routes reopen, Faizabad Interchange stays shut

Traffic movement in most parts of Rawalpindi was restored on Sunday after two days of severe disruption caused by protests, as authorities cleared roadblocks and reopened several key routes.

According to traffic officials, major arteries including Peshawar Road, Chaklala Road, Airport Road, The Mall, and Murree Road from Mareer Chowk to Double Road Chowk have been reopened, easing congestion across the city. Roads within the Cantonment area and the city center are also operational again.

However, the Faizabad Interchange — the main link between Rawalpindi and Islamabad — remains closed, with heavy containers still blocking access. Parts of Murree Road near Shamsabad also continue to face restrictions, keeping adjoining routes such as IJP Road and the Double Road–Faizabad link under partial closure.

The Metro Bus service connecting the twin cities remains suspended for the third consecutive day, adding to commuter difficulties.

Motorway routes, including M-1 to Peshawar, M-2 to Lahore, M-3 from Lahore to Abdul Hakeem, and M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, are operating normally with traffic flowing smoothly.

The blockade of major intercity roads over the past two days had left thousands stranded and disrupted movement between Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and nearby districts. Many residents struggled to reach workplaces, hospitals, and schools, while businesses and supply chains suffered delays.

With the reopening of key routes, transport and goods movement have begun to normalize across the twin cities. Traffic wardens have been deployed along major roads to manage the returning flow and ensure smooth passage.
