LAHORE: An Elite Force official was martyred, and two others sustained injuries when Katcha dacoits ambushed a patrolling police van in Rajanpur’s Bangla Achha area late Saturday night, police said on Saturday.

According to the Police Department’s spokesperson, Elite Force official Nasir Mirani embraced martyrdom, while driver Constable Mehmood and Elite Constable Sanaullah were injured in the firing. The bodies and injured officials were shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Following the attack, a heavy police contingent led by DPO Rajanpur Farooq Amjad reached the scene, where an intense gun battle took place. The dacoits, however, managed to flee under the cover of darkness.

Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Usman Anwar took notice of the incident and sought a detailed report from RPO Dera Ghazi Khan. Paying tribute to the slain officer, the IGP said Constable Nasir Mirani’s sacrifice would never be forgotten and directed the DPO to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured.

Dr Anwar further ordered the Rajanpur Police to mobilize all resources to arrest the culprits, assuring that the Punjab Police will stand by the family of the martyred officer and ensure their complete welfare and support.

Third phase of foreign nationals’ evacuation begins

Meanwhile, the third phase of the evacuation of illegally residing foreign nationals across Punjab has begun, according to the Punjab Police.

The department said that during the three phases so far, 21,805 foreign nationals—including Afghan citizens—have been deported, while 123 individuals remain at holding points. There are currently five holding centres in Lahore and 46 across the province.

IG Punjab Dr Usman Anwar said the police were ensuring the repatriation process under international laws while maintaining respect for human rights. He added that Punjab Police continues to operate under a high security alert to ensure the safe and lawful evacuation of all illegal residents.
