KARACHI: A female student of the University of Karachi, identified as Aniqa Saeed, died on Friday after being struck by a university bus inside the campus, police said.

Saeed, a second-year student from the Department of Social Work, was getting off the bus when the accident occurred. She was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police confirmed that the bus driver had been detained, while the victim’s family decided not to pursue legal action.

The incident sparked protests on campus, with students demanding stricter transport safety measures and accountability from the university administration.

Sindh Minister for Universities and Boards Ismail Rahoo termed the incident tragic and sought a detailed report from the vice chancellor. He ordered an inquiry and assured that those responsible would face disciplinary action.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori also took notice of the accident, directing the university to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report. He extended condolences to the bereaved family and asked police to ensure transparency in the probe.

The University of Karachi administration expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying the entire academic community stood with the victim’s family in this difficult time.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi suspended the driver and formed a four-member inquiry committee led by Department of Criminology Chairperson Professor Dr Naima Saeed. The panel also includes NED University’s transport in-charge and two students from the Department of Social Work.

The committee has been tasked with investigating the incident and submitting a detailed report to the vice chancellor, who said that preventive measures will follow to ensure student safety on campus.
