The Sindh government on Monday issued a notification to extend the last date for acquiring the new numb plates for vehicles from August 14 to October 31.
The notification came a few hours after the Sindh Excise and Taxation Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla said on the Sindh Assembly floor that the Sindh government might consider extending the date for new number plates.
The new number plates with Ajrak design have special features, which according to the government are readable by the surveillance cameras of the safe city project.
Responding to a call-attention notice by MQM member Qurat-ul-Ain Khan during Monday’s Sindh Assembly session, he said the new plates are applicable across Sindh and enforcement will be strict everywhere.
He mentioned that the new number plates were introduced in 2021, and within two to three months, new centers will be established in Korangi, SITE Area, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Qurat-ul-Ain Khan pointed out that enforcement is lax in rural areas, while Karachi residents are being unnecessarily targeted. “The given deadline is too short, and the public is facing serious difficulties. The government should reconsider,” she said.
Consequently, the deadline has been extended by the government.
Sindh Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution to pay tribute to martyred police officers. The resolution was presented by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) member Farooq Awan, who called on the Sindh government to provide healthcare, education, and a special benefits package for the families of police martyrs.
Home Minister Sindh Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar supported the resolution, stating, “Today is Police Day, and the resolution holds great significance in the house. On the very day, Inspector General of Police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was martyred. The martyrs of Sindh Police laid down their lives to protect the lives and property of the people.”
He said, he had personally visited the katcha areas, where police officers are bravely conducting operations against terrorists. These areas are so difficult to access that even APCs (armored personnel carriers) get stuck, yet police personnel remain resolute.”
Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani also supported the resolution, saying that Farooq Awan’s services are part of history. “He was attacked but returned to the field with renewed dedication,” he said. Ghani also highlighted the police’s need for modern weapons and technology, pointing out that “terrorists have access to advanced weapons and facilities that police do not.”
He paid tribute to the sacrifices of Pakistan Army, Rangers, and intelligence agencies, noting that peace has only been achieved through their joint efforts.
Opposition Leader Ali Khursheedi also honored the police and other security force martyrs as a source of national pride, saying, “We must equip the police with modern weapons so they can perform their duties effectively.”
