A police constable was critically injured on Thursday morning when muggers opened fire on him during a motorcycle snatching attempt in Manzoor Colony, within the remits of Baloch Colony police station.

According to police, 38-year-old Constable Zaheer Abbas was shot in the shoulder when he resisted the suspects. He was rushed to JPMC, where doctors later declared him out of danger.

Ps Baloch Colony SHO Mazhar Kango said the incident occurred when Abbas, posted at Darakhshan police station, left home for court proceedings. Armed muggers intercepted him and attempted to snatch his newly purchased motorcycle. On resistance, the muggers opened fire, injuring him, before fleeing the scene without the motorcycle.

The SHO added that Abbas had been wearing a plain shirt over his police uniform, possibly leading the muggers to mistake him for a civilian. Police arrived at the scene, collected evidence, and launched a search for the culprits. Abbas, a resident of Manzoor Colony, had purchased the motorcycle just two weeks earlier.

Based on preliminary investigation, police said three muggers on two motorcycles carried out the assault and also took away the constable’s personal pistol before fleeing.

Eyewitnesses told media that after hearing gunshots, they saw Abbas lying injured on the street while the suspects tried to start his motorcycle. “

We raised alarm from our rooftops, upon which they abandoned the motorcycle and escaped,” one resident said. Local residents complained that street crimes had become routine in the area, adding that a resident was robbed at the same spot two days ago, while a motorcycle was snatched from there six months back.

CCTV footage obtained by police shows the assailants abandoning the motorcycle and running away in panic, while a woman can be seen ducking for cover as the crime unfolded. The suspects, dressed in shalwar kameez with their faces clearly visible, are being traced with the help of the footage.

Slain suspect involved in cop’s murder

A suspect killed in an alleged police encounter in Bhains Colony, Malir, has been found to be involved in the murder of a police officer.

SSP Malir, Abdul Khaliq Pirzada, reported that the suspect, along with an accomplice, was fleeing after robbing citizens in Bhains Colony. Upon spotting police, the suspects opened fire. In the resulting exchange, Shah Muhammad alias Shan Chandio was injured, while his accomplice managed to escape. Chandio succumbed to his injuries in transit to Jinnah Hospital, and was pronounced dead upon arrival. Police recovered a pistol with ammunition, a mobile phone, and a motorcycle from his possession.

SSP Pirzada revealed that the slain suspect was involved in the killing of police officer Shaheed Khan Abro on August 18, in the jurisdiction of Bin Qasim police station. The murder case, FIR No 340/2025, had been registered under Sections 302, 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

Additionally, Chandio was reportedly involved in several street crimes across various police jurisdictions. He was also wanted in cases of kidnapping for ransom and other offenses. SSP Sheikh added that raids are ongoing to arrest the absconding accomplice.
