A 29-year-old man has died at a private hospital in Karachi due to Naegleria fowleri, a rare but deadly brain-eating amoeba. This marks the fifth Naegleria-related death in Sindh so far this year.
According to the Sindh Health Department, the deceased was a resident of District Central and began showing symptoms on September 7. He was admitted to the hospital on September 11, but passed away the same day.
Laboratory tests conducted on September 12 confirmed the presence of Naegleria fowleri. Health officials said that the victim had not engaged in any recreational water activities, such as swimming, and had only used tap water for drinking and bathing.
Medical experts have reiterated concerns over the rising threat of Naegleria in Sindh and have urged the public to use boiled or properly chlorinated water. They also emphasised the importance of chlorination in all water storage facilities to prevent further infections.
