BRESCIA: On the evening of 6 September, the Muslim community in Brescia gathered at the Muhammadiah Islamic Centre for a moving and well-attended programme marking the 1,500th birth anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad SAAW. The event – one of many around the world commemorating this historic milestone – drew families, scholars and community leaders from across northern Italy and invited guests from abroad. Organisers said the programme combined devotional recitation, Seerah (life-of-the-Prophet) reflection, and calls for renewed social responsibility, at a moment when many communities are trying to connect traditional observance with contemporary challenges.
The celebration at the Muhammadiah Islamic Centre opened with the recital of Qur’anic verses and nasheeds (poetic songs in praise of the Prophet), followed by short tributes recalling the Prophet’s compassion, humility and service to the poor. A large turnout of local families – many of them second- and third-generation Italians of South Asian or North African heritage – gave the hall a lively, multigenerational atmosphere. The programme was carefully structured to be accessible to non-Arabic speakers, with translations and short Italian segments woven between Urdu, and Arabic passages.
A highlight of the afternoon was the address delivered by Molana (Allama) Rasool Bakhsh Saeedi, a well-known scholar based in the United Kingdom, who participated as a guest speaker. Allama Saeedi, who has lectured widely in the UK and Europe and is recognised for his blend of classical scholarship and accessible commentary, addressed the Brescia gathering via a scheduled appearance. In addition, there was a lucky chance to get a free Umrah ticket along with €300 to one of the participants and Tafseer Zia-Un-Nabi.
Following the addresses, organisers unveiled a set of local initiatives tied to the commemoration: increased community outreach to elderly residents, an expanded weekend programme of language and civics classes for newcomers, and a partnership with a local food-bank to step-up winter provision efforts. The centre’s leadership framed these programmes as part of a broader ethic: the anniversary is an occasion for spiritual renewal and for measurable, long-term contributions to the wider Brescia community. Several speakers also mentioned global projects connected to the 1500th anniversary – from mosque-building drives in under-served regions to international conferences exploring the Prophet’s ethical legacy. Such transnational initiatives have been prominent in international coverage of the 1500th celebrations. At the end of the program Molana Rasool Bakhsh Saeedi made a Dua for flood affected people in Pakistan.
