ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday lauded the Pakistan Navy for its professionalism, courage, and resolve in safeguarding the country’s maritime frontiers, while also urging nationwide efforts to overcome illiteracy.
In his message on Navy Day (September 8), the Prime Minister paid tribute to officers and personnel for their sacrifices and services, recalling Operation Somnath in the 1965 war as a landmark of bravery and operational excellence. He said the Navy continues to play a pivotal role not only in defending Pakistan’s sovereignty but also in advancing the blue economy, maritime development, disaster relief, and international naval cooperation.
Shehbaz noted that the spirit of 1965 remains alive, with the Navy demonstrating strength and readiness in recent years, sending a clear signal of Pakistan’s resolve to protect its maritime borders at all costs.
In a separate message marking International Literacy Day, the Prime Minister highlighted education as the foundation of national progress. Expressing concern over Pakistan’s literacy rate of just 60 percent, he stressed urgent measures to bring it in line with global standards.
He said federal and provincial governments are united in their mission to promote education and called on parents, teachers, and society at large to join hands in defeating illiteracy. “Let us replace the darkness of ignorance with the light of knowledge for a stronger, developed Pakistan,” he urged.
