Rick Davies, British singer-songwriter and co-founder of the rock band Supertramp, has died aged 81 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
The band confirmed in a statement that Davies passed away at his home on Long Island on September 5 following more than a decade-long fight with Multiple Myeloma.
Davies, the only constant member of Supertramp, was celebrated as the driving force behind classics including Goodbye Stranger and Bloody Well Right. His bandmates described him as a musician of “warmth, resilience, and devotion,” and extended condolences to his wife Sue, the group’s former manager.
Born in Swindon, England, in 1944, Davies founded Supertramp in 1969. After retiring from touring due to health issues, he continued performing with local group Ricky and the Rockets.
“Rick’s music and legacy continue to inspire, proving that great songs never die; they live on,” the band’s statement concluded.
