A renewed spell of the ongoing monsoon seasons, which has entailed devastation in Punjab, lashed many districts of Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas divisions on Sunday with up to 105 millimeter downpour in 24 hours recorded in Tharparkar. The showers began in Matiari, Tando Allahyar, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot and Tharparkar districts by Saturday evening.
The rainfall continued sporadically in these districts on Sunday when the precipitation also kicked off in Hyderabad by 6.20 pm, breaking five days long spell of hot and humid weather. A partial urban flooding was witnessed in Mithi and Diplo talukas of Tharparkar where ankle to knee deep water accumulated on the roads. The district’s civil hospital also became submerged.
The dwellers of riverbed villages, who have moved out of their homes because of the enhancing flood level in the river, appeared particularly affected by the rain. In Badin district, a katcha house caved in, leaving a child injured in the incident. The house belonged to Peeru Kolhi whose daughter was injured in the collapse. A revenue official, Lal Bajeer, visited the affected family and he reportedly assured of compensation.
Islamkot taluka of Tharparkar received 65 mm rain in around 20 hours, starting from Saturday evening. The town’s main market, hospital road and several residential and commercial localities were partially inundated. Widespread power outages, carried out by Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO), were reported from these districts.
Hyderabad was also not an exception as outages instantly followed the showers. The company’s spokesman did not share the scale of outages in the rain hit cities.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more rains in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Nawabshah, Larkana, Tharparkar, Thatta and other districts.
